The Dept. of Public Health exercises general control over the enforcement of laws relating to public health in Alabama. This record series, meeting agenda and minutes, 1896-1979, documents the meetings of the State Board of Censors, later known as the State Committee of Public Health. Topics discussed include: the election of a Public Health Officer; the filling of vacancies on the Board of Censors/Committee of Public Health; formulation of procedures to combat epidemics and outbreaks of infectious diseases; vaccination programs; the establishment of state health laboratiories; certification and licensing of physicians; establishment of curricula for medical education; establishment of reciprocal agreements whereby physicians from other states could practice in Alabama; recommendation of proposed legislation affecting public health; and hearing cases involving charges of malpractice or ethics violations by physicians. Some volumes contain "exhibits," which may include reports, memoranda, correspondence, charts, statistical tables, or testimony from hearings.
